Abdul Hamid Chowdhury

Abdul Hamid Chowdhury was a Bengali politician and zamindar who served as the Speaker of the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly. The British government awarded him the title of Khan Bahadur, but he later declined the title in protest of the various atrocities organized by the British Empire, in protest of discrimination and support for the anti-British movement.

Career

Abdul Hamid Chowdhury was the Deputy President of the Bengal Legislative Assembly from 1939 to 1947.[1] From 1951 to 1953, he was the Deputy High Commissioner of the then Pakistan High Commission in Calcutta and dean of the diplomatic corps. He used to do politics with Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy and Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani.[2] From 1962 to 1968, he served as the Speaker of the then East Pakistan Provincial Assembly.

Besides, he served as a member of the Greater Mymensingh District Board and later as the Chairman for 40 consecutive years. He was the first Muslim president of the school committee of Mymensingh Zilla School and also served as the director of the National Bank of Pakistan.[3]

Personal life

Abdul Hamid Chowdhury was born in Nagbari union of Kalihati upazila of Tangail district (then Greater Mymensingh in British India). His only son, Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, was the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, the Justice of Bangladesh and the President.[4] His grandson Abul Hasan Chowdhury served as the state minister for Foreign Affairs in Sheikh Hasina's first cabinet.[5]  Abdul Hamid Chowdhury died on 4 September 1969.
