Betul Haile Maryam

Betul Haile Maryam[note 1] (b. 1812 - d. 29 June 1853, Aysal) was a member of the Semien nobility through his paternal line.

This article is about a person whose name includes a patronymic. The article properly refers to the person by his given name, Betul, and not as Haile Maryam.

Ancestry

Betul Haile Maryam was a son of Haile Maryam Gebre, the provincial governor of Semien by Hirut Gugsa.[1]

His full siblings were Merso Haile Maryam and Yewub-dar Haile Maryam, both of whom were older. His half brother Wube Haile Maryam was one of the most famous protagonist of the Zemene Mesafint era.[1][2]

He was the father of Taytu Betul[2]

Biography

Succession and exile

After the death of his father, Haile Maryam Gebre in 1826. Semien military officers chose Wube Haile Maryam to lead Semien instead of his brother Merso. Betul with his mother and Merso fled to Tigray province. Betul's sister Yewub-dar was married to Sabagadis Woldu, the Irob warlord that controlled much of Tigray.[1][2]
