Bindu Kumar Thapa

Bindu Kumar Thapa (Nepali: बिंदु कुमार थापा) is a Nepali politician of Nepali Congress and served as a minister in Gandaki government since 23 July 2021 to December 2022. Bindu Kumar Thapa served as a Member of Parliament of Gandaki Province Assembly in the provincial election of 2017 and was also reelected in the same constituency in the provincial election of 2022 as well. He was elected as a member of Gandaki Province Assembly for the second time in the local election held on 2022 [1] Gandaki Province Provincial Assembly.[2] Thapa was elected to the 2017 provincial assembly elections from Kaski 2(A).[3] Mr. Thapa was also the only elected member of provincial assembly from Kaski District representing Nepali Congress in the local election of 2017. He joined Krishna Chandra Nepali cabinet as Minister for Law, Communication and Provincial Assembly Affairs on 23 July 2021.[4]

He is also a former president of the Pokhara Chamber of Commerce and Industry(PCCI)[5] and has served on several committees in the provincial parliament. Bindu Kumar Thapa is a well-acclaimed visionary leader who also devoted his time to developing his business interests, which led to the formation and creation of his own conglomerate company “Ansuvara Group”.[6] Mr. Thapa owns around a dozen business ventures and serves society through his political moves. He thus belongs in the pantheon of the nation's great leaders and business pioneers.


Despite his current status as a successful businessman, Mr. Thapa had a very humble beginning as he was not born with a silver spoon and came from a middle-class family. Having completed his primary education at Mahendra Secondary School and higher studies at Barahi Secondary School, he proceeded to Prithivi Narayan Campus(PNC), where he obtained his degree in law.

Bindu Kumar Thapa started his career as an assistant clerk at Nepal Rastra Bank(NRB) but deep inside, Mr. Thapa always had a deep-rooted attachment to the bigger picture of his life. A remarkable incident where he was denied to rent a motorbike helped spark a shift from service to business fuelling his Entrepreneurial Success. He started his first venture of renting a motorbike and later on established himself as a successful businessman and Ansuvara Group as one of the remarkable business houses in Pokhara.

Bindu Kumar Thapa is the very definition of Pokhara's success story, setting the excellence in his business endeavors, and now dedicating himself to politics for changing the existing degraded view of politics from a civilian's perspective. Mr. Thapa has had a strong belief in democratic norms and values from his early days. Involvement in Nepal Rastra Bank Staff Union as a member in 2050 BS ignited his desire to contribute and be a part of the organizational and political cause. After completing his degree in Law, he served as a member of the Democratic Lawyers Association(DLA). Since then, Mr. Thapa has been a member of the Nepali Congress as a dedicated and critical cadet of Nepal's Democratic movement. He was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly in 2016 AD. In the provincial election of 2016, he is the only elected candidate from Nepali Congress in Kaski District. Formulating a master plan for the development of the provincial state is an extremely challenging job but Mr. Thapa believes in promises made and promises kept. He has visualized his election manifesto in the real field and has served on different committees in the provincial assembly. Making Gandaki Province a hub for hydroelectricity production, holding skills manpower in Nepal itself by creating opportunities by promoting entrepreneurs program funding soft loans, creating an environment for foreign investment, systematic use of internal investment, development of industrialization, development of tourism activities and exploration of new touristic hubs and commercialize the agriculture sector by recognizing the pocket area and introducing modern technology and process are his some areas of focus. He served on various committees in the provincial assembly and also served as minister of Law communication and provincial assembly affairs of Gandaki Province in 2021.

Chairman of Ansuvara Group, Mr. Thapa owns more than dozens of business firms and ventures. Ansuvara group is dedicated to intensifying the entrepreneur activity and contributing to national economic development by encouraging the new wave of innovators and entrepreneurs and also diversifying the local economy components by incorporating global trends and needs. Ansuvara Group now owns multiple ventures in the fields of Automobile, Real-Estate, Hospitality, Malls, Financial Services, Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) &, and Infotech.

Before entering politics, Mr. Thapa served as a Chairman of the Pokhara Chamber of Commerce and Industry(PCCI), a non-profit making and non-governmental organization established in 1955 AD. During his tenure as president for 2 years and his involvement as a board member for more than 10 years, Mr. Thapa executed different proposals and plans to strengthen the economy of the nation and also advocated for the formulation of a business-friendly policy. During his chairmanship tenure, Mr. Thapa set a history of amending the bylaws of PCCI in 55 years for the first time, and that too for the growth and betterment of PCCI. The Regional International airport in Pokhara was a dream project and during his chairmanship, Mr. Thapa made several delegations to the capital and raised the voice of the Pokhara people. Thanks to Mr. Thapa and all concerned that we have our own Regional International airport in Pokhara today. Besides PCCI, Mr. Thapa also served as Vice President of the Nepal Automobile Dealers Association NADA (2008 - 2010), President of Nepal Russia Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Gandaki Chapter (2012-2016), Advisor of Paschimanchal Automobile Dealers Association (2005 - 2016), Advisor of Gandaki Land and Housing Association (2002 - 2016), and also the senator of Pokhara University(PU).

Personal life

Born and raised in Pokhara, Thapa graduated in law from Prithvi Narayan Campus, Pokhara. Before joining politics, Mr. Thapa was the chairman of Pokhara Chamber of Commerce in industries from the year 2014 to 2016.[7] Thapa was also the Vice president of Nepal Automobile Dealers Association from 2008-10. He is also the chairman of Ansuvara Group, the leading business house established in 1993.

Thapa is a popular leader and is renowned for his compassion and philanthropy. He is the chairperson of the famous shopping center in Pokhara named Pokhara Trade Mall.

Family

He is the eldest son of Mr. Chandra Bahadur Thapa, a retired Army, and his mother Chandrakala Thapa, and spent his early years and childhood in Nayabazar, Pokhara. He is the father of four children, two sons Saugat Thapa and Abiral Thapa and two daughters.

Mr. Thapa has always been an advocate and voice for the voiceless in Parliament arousing and identifying the issues of the people on the ground. He believes that equality is only ensured through common opportunities for people of any caste and creed. Though many of the provinces have been unnamed, Mr. Thapa is widely acknowledged for his effective contribution as a Committee Chair in the Province naming committee. Because if his committee province no. 4 is finally called “Gandaki Province” as per his committee’s recommendation. [8]
