Elly Schlein

Elena "Elly" Ethel Schlein (born 4 May 1985) is an Italian politician, a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the Democratic Party, and formerly vice-president of Emilia-Romagna and Member of the European Parliament.

Biography

Daughter of two academics, Schlein graduated in Law at the University of Bologna in 2011, discussing a thesis on Constitutional Law.[1]

Political commitment

In 2011, Schlein was one of the founders of the association of university students known as Progrè, an association that dealt with deepening and sensitizing public opinion on issues related to migration policies and the prison reality.[2]

Former Prime Minister Romano Prodi received in support less than 100 centre-left electors and left the presidential election campaign. In April 2013, Schlein gave life to the mobilization campaign known as #OccupyPD, which opposed the formation of a grand coalition government, the Letta Cabinet.[3]

In occasion of the 2013 leadership election of the Democratic Party, Schlein gave her support to Giuseppe Civati, who ranked third.[4]

Member of the European Parliament

In February 2014, Schlein ran with the Democratic Party for a seat at the European Parliament in the North-Eastern constituency. In the 2014 European election, Schlein was elected to the European Parliament.[5]

In May 2015, she announced, through a post on Facebook, that she was leaving the Democratic Party, being in deep disagreement with the new political line of the party impressed by Secretary Matteo Renzi, and joined Possible, the party founded by Giuseppe Civati.[6]

In April 2019, Schlein announced her intention not to run for the European Parliament at the 2019 European election.[7]

Vice-president of Emilia-Romagna

In 2020, Schlein ran as a candidate for member of the regional council of Emilia-Romagna as part of a left-wing electoral alliance called "Emilia-Romagna Coraggiosa Ecologista e Progressista" (For a Brave, Ecologist and Progressive Emilia-Romagna). She was elected by achieving over 22,000 votes, being the most voted councillor in regional history, and was subsequently appointed by Stefano Bonaccini as his vice-president.

2022 general election and Democratic Party leadership run

In 2022, she was a candidate in the Italian general election, being subsequently elected in the Italian Chamber of Deputies. A few weeks later, following Enrico Letta's resignations as leader of the Democratic Party, Schlein announced her run for the 2023 party leadership election.

Personal life

Schlein's father is Jewish;[8] her grandfather was Italian Socialist politician Agostino Viviani.[9] She is bisexual.[10]
