2023 Indian Premier League

The 2023 Indian Premier League, also known as IPL 16 or, for sponsorship reasons, Tata IPL 2023, will be the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.[1] Gujarat Titans are the defending champions.

Background

In June 2022, the broadcasting rights for 2023 to 2027 seasons were sold for ₹48,390 crore (US$6.1 billion) by the BCCI, marking it the second most valuable tournament in the world after the NFL (overtaking the English Premier League).[2] Star Sports had renewed its television contract, and Viacom18 consortium had exclusively acquired the streaming rights.[3]

BCCI Introduced Impact Player Rule ahead of IPL, teams can take four substitute or impact players on the Squad apart from the eleven players playing a particular match, The team can use one of the four substitutes during the match in the place of any Player in the initial XI.[4]

Personnel changes

In November 2022, Shikhar Dhawan replaced Mayank Agarwal as the captain of Punjab Kings.[5] Anil Kumble was also replaced by Trevor Bayliss as head coach of Punjab Kings. In August 2022, Chandrakant Pandit replaced Brendon McCullum as head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.[6] Tom Moody was also replaced by Brian Lara as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad.[7]

The IPL auction took place on 23 December 2022 in Kochi.[8] The most expensive player was Sam Curran, bought by Punjab Kings for ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million), He became the most expensive player in IPL history.[9]

To reduce the duration of the league, as it returned to the home and away format as it was till 2019 season (and was changed due to COVID 19 pandemic), format of the league was changed and was made that each team plays the teams in the same group (4 teams) one time (2 in home and two away) and the other group two times (once in home and once away) resulting into 14 matches (7 home, 7 away) for each team, and 70 matches in the tournament, both remaining same, from the previous season.

Broadcasting

From this season onwards Jio cinema app will stream IPL in 4K resolution which was never done before. Star Sports will broadcast only on television.[11]
