Immortal X-Men is an American superhero comic book series written by Kieron Gillen and published by Marvel Comics.[3]

Publication history

Writer-editor Jonathan Hickman and artist/co-plotter Pepe Larraz created the Quiet Council of Krakoa in House of X #6 (October, 2019). The Council appeared in many comics in the Dawn of X and Reign of X relaunches, creating and enforcing the laws of Krakoa and prosecuting and delivering judgement on mutants accused of breaking those laws.[4]

In March 2022, the council got their own comic book as Immortal X-Men as part of the Destiny of X relaunch.[5] It was written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Lucas Werneck, building plot points for their upcoming event Sins of Sinister.[6] After briefly transformed into the Immoral X-Men limited series, Gillen and Wernck will continue their next story plans for the Immortal X-Men.[7][8]

Plot

After the events of Inferno, Magneto stepped down from the Quiet Council of Krakoa. The Quiet Council searched for replacement candidates, including the Black Priestess and Hope Summers. After the Black Priestess was outvoted by Hope in her effort to take Magneto's seat, she transformed the External Gate into a giant monster. The Quiet Council successfully managed to kill the Black Priestess, while also defeating the monster.[9]

The Quiet Council kept their differences secret from the X-Men. Mister Sinister started using clones of Moira to reset timelines, and schemed against the Quiet Council. Human-mutant relations started to deteriorate when Cyclops revealed the existence of the Resurrection Protocols to Ben Urich. After confronting him at the Hellfire Gala, the White Queen shared the truth about Moira with the X-Men in order to learn about Doctor Stasis.

Judgment Day

Prime Eternal Druig and Moira planned to destroy Resurrection Protocols. Destiny foresaw the upcoming war between the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals and alerted Quiet Council. While White Queen informed them about Doctor Statis, Mister Sinister's clone claiming to be the real Sinister. This caused Nathaniel Essex to escape only to be captured briefly by Eternals to start life into Progenitor in the Avengers Mountain and stop Druig.[10]

Eternals attacked Quiet Council's telepath by the Uni-Mind which also allowed the Eternals to assault the Krakoa. Exodus coordinated telepathic counterattack along with Professor X, White Queen and Hope, before joining the fight against the Hex. The assassination of Hope was prevented by Wolverine and the Hex were being eventually retreated from battle by Progenitor, who addressed that people of Earth will be judged.

Only Red Queen and Exodus were judged positively while Black King, Destiny, Mystique, Professor X and White Queen received negative judgment. Mister Sinister and Destiny influenced Quiet Council to vote for destruction the Progenitor but that along with the election of Starfox as new Prime Eternal didn't prevented the Progenitor from destroying Earth. Avengers, Eternals, X-Men and even Orchis after the contact of Nightcrawler managed to defeat Progenitor.

Sins of Sinister

Destiny and Mystique were aware that there are three other clones of Mister Sinister, who was suspicious of Destiny predicting his use of Moira clones. This led to many resets in the timeline as he managed to assassinate many members of the Quiet Council. After taking control of Krakoa in secret, Beast, Namor, and Magik joined the genetically altered council in an altered timeline.

Reception

In 2022, Immortal X-Men won the IGN's Best Comic Book Series or Original Graphic Novel[16] as well as Dragon Awards for Best Comic Book.[17]

In 2023, CBR.com ranked Immortal X-Men 2nd in their "Top 100 Comics of 2022" list.[18] It was also nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book at the 34th GLAAD Media Awards.[19]

According to review aggregation website Comic Book Roundup, Immortal X-Men received an average rating of 8.8 out of 10 based on 88 critics on review.[20]
