Biography

Born in Castries, Alfred attended the University of Texas[1] where she pursued a bachelor's degree in Youth & Community Studies.

At the age of 21, Julien Alfred became one of the top 30 fastest women ever. Her run of 10.81 seconds (+1.7 m/s) in preliminaries of the women’s 100m [2] at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex in Lubbock, Texas (USA) on 14 May 2022 was a Saint Lucia National Record and a Big 12 Championships meet record. It also marked her as the fastest woman ever from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. At the time, only six Caribbean women had ever run faster, and in the North and Central American and Caribbean Athletics Confederation (NACAC) region, only 17.

Alfred's records included a wind-aided run of 10.80 (+2.2 m/s) in the 2022 NCAA Division I West Regional - the fastest time ever recorded under any conditions at an NCAA preliminary. She also had the all-time best NCAA performance in the 60m dash during the indoor season earlier in the year, running an astounding 7.04 seconds.[3]

Hailing from the south Castries community of Ciceron, she won the 2022 NCAA Division I 100m title [4] in 11.02 seconds (+0.2 m/s) the day after her 21st birthday, completing an unbeaten collegiate season in that event. Running for the University of Texas, she became the first track athlete from Saint Lucia to win a Division I championship, and just the second Saint Lucian overall, after high jumper Jeannelle Scheper.

She went on to win her event [5] at the inaugural Caribbean Games in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, in a time of 11.07 seconds (-0.2 m/s).

As a junior athlete, Alfred was the Commonwealth Youth Games 100m champion in 2017, when the Games were held in Nassau, the Bahamas. She also captured silver in the Youth Olympic Games in 2018, at Buenos Aires, Argentina, behind Nigeria’s Rosemary Chukwuma. All of this built on her triumphant outings as a juvenile athlete - she was a Central American and Caribbean U15 champion in 2015.

Before Texas, Alfred attended Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School in Saint Lucia (2013–15), and St. Catherine's High School in Jamaica (2015-2018).

In 2015 and 2017, Alfred was recognised as Saint Lucia’s Junior Sportswoman of the Year.[6]
