It competes with KBS World, which is owned by the state-owned KBS, as they both target the international public. The channels have seemingly at least some overlapping, and the need of KIBF as a PR company has come into question.[2]
History
The company was founded on April 10, 1996 and began domestic broadcasting the following year.[1]
In 1999, it began broadcasting TV to the rest of the world.
By 2000, its satellite signal had covered the globe. These broadcasts were primarily in English, with subtitle service provided in multiple languages including Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Indonesian and Vietnamese. This service is now known as Arirang World. 2003 saw the launch of Arirang Radio, an English language FM radio broadcasting in South Korea.
In 2004, its Arabic TV service, Arirang Arab, began.
In 2015, Arirang advanced into the UN In-house network and started a UN channel.
In 2016, Arirang launched a satellite channel in the United Kingdom.
In May 2020 Arirang TV and The Korea Times signed a memorandum of understanding deepening the co-operation between the two.[3]
