Lucas Broussard

Broussard began skating in 2016, and previously trained at the Highland Skating Club in Shoreline, Washington. He made his national debut in 2018–19 figure skating season, winning the Northwest Pacific Regionals, the Pacific Coast Sectionals, and finally the U.S. National title on the juvenile level.

In the next season, Broussard moved up to the intermediate category domestically and the advanced novice category nationally. He once again won the Northwest Pacific Regionals and the Pacific Sectionals before winning the silver medal in his international debut at the 2020 International Challenge Cup.

During the 2020-21 season greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, most American athletes competed exclusively on the domestic level. At the ISP Points Challenge, Broussard won the silver medal on the junior division. Next competing in the virtual U.S. Championship Series to qualify a spot at the 2021 U.S. Junior Nationals, Broussard finished in first. At nationals, Broussard placed 6th at the junior level after finishing last in the short program and 4th in the free skate.

Broussard's first appearance on the ISU Junior Grand Prix came at the first of two consecutive events held in Courchevel, France. At the event, Broussard finished second overall, behind only fellow American Ilia Malinin. A month later, at the Junior Grand Prix in Russia, Broussard finished in 8th place, although scored roughly 6 points higher then at his first event.[4][5] He later competed at a U.S. Figure Skating Championships Series event in Spokane, Washington where he won the gold medal.

Although set to compete at the 2022 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Broussard was forced to withdraw due to a positive COVID-19 test. He still qualified for the 2022 World Junior Figure Skating Championships that were set to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria. However, because of a hip injury, he additionally withdrew from the championships.[6]

Broussard started his season off at the first of two back-to-back events in Gdańsk, Poland. Despite finishing just 5th in the short program and 2nd in the free, Broussard comfortably won the overall competition over Chen Yudong of China. Two weeks later at the JGP Italy, Broussard placed first in the short program by about a point over Japanese Shunsuke Nakamura. Although Nakamura beat Broussard in the free program by about a point, the latter's small lead from the short allowed him to narrowly edge out the former for his second gold medal on the Junior Grand Prix series.[7][8]

Returning to Italy as the top-seeded qualifier 2022–23 ISU Junior Grand Prix Final in Torino, Broussard as a medal favorite due to his success on the Junior Grand Prix series. In the short program, he skated cleanly to earn a personal best, topping his previous by over six points.[9] In the free skate, Broussard placed third following three underrotations within his program. He set a new personal best for the total combined score, and finished the competition with a silver medal, behind only Italian native Nikolaj Memola.

Competing at the U.S. junior national championships in San Jose, California, Broussard finished first in the short program, and after incorporating a quad toe into his free skate, also finished first in that segment. He finished the competition beating his nearest competitor by over 20 points, breaking the U.S. Nationals scoring record for junior men and winning his first national title at any level since 2019.
