Magic Mike's Last Dance

Magic Mike's Last Dance is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh, written by Reid Carolin, and produced by Channing Tatum. It is the third installment in the Magic Mike trilogy, following Magic Mike (2012) and Magic Mike XXL (2015). The film stars Channing Tatum as the titular retired male stripper, who leaves Florida for London to help a socialite (Salma Hayek Pinault) produce a stage play.

Originally intended to be digitally released onto HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures opted to give the film a theatrical release following strong test screenings. Magic Mike's Last Dance had world premiere red carpet at the Miami Beach in January 25, 2023 and released in the United States on February 10, 2023. The film has grossed $19 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics.

Plot

Former male stripper Mike Lane, who has since lost his furniture business during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now living in Miami working as a bartender for a catering company. At a fundraising event hosted by Maxandra "Max" Mendoza, Mike is recognized by Kim, a lawyer for Max's foundation. After the event, Max has her employee ask Mike to speak with her privately.

Alone, Max says Kim told her about his prowess and asks how much she would have to pay him for a lap dance. Mike says he's retired, but ultimately says $60,000 when pushed for a price. Max agrees, but during the dance she and Mike give in to passion and sleep together.

The next morning, Max offers to take Mike to London for a month and pay him the $60,000 for his time.

Development

A sequel, Magic Mike's Last Dance, was announced on November 29, 2021, to be released on HBO Max, with Channing Tatum once again playing Mike Lane and Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first film in the series, returning to direct.[5] Thandiwe Newton was initially cast in an unspecified role but was replaced by Salma Hayek in April 2022.[6]

In July 2022, Soderbergh announced that there are developments ongoing for additional installments in the franchise for stories centered around other characters unrelated to Mike Lane.[7] In September 2022, it was announced the film would now be released in theatres, receiving a release date of February 10, 2023.[8]

In November 2022, Gavin Spokes, Caitlin Gerard, Christopher Bencomo, Ayub Khan Din, and Juliette Motamed were revealed as co-stars alongside Tatum and Hayek.[9]

Release

Magic Mike's Last Dance had its world premiere red carpet at the Miami Beach, Florida in January 25, 2023,[10] and theatrically released on February 10, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is Soderbergh's first film to be given a full theatrical release since Unsane (2018).[8] Marketing was largely done with TV spots on Warner Bros. Discovery channels. iSpot estimated that Warner Bros. spent "just under" $9 million on the TV spots.[11]

Box office

As of February 13, 2023, Magic Mike's Last Dance has grossed $9.1 million in the United States and Canada, and $10.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $19.3 million.[3][4]

In the United States and Canada, Magic Mike's Last Dance was projected to gross $8–10 million from 1,500 theaters in its opening weekend.[12][11] It made $4.1 million on its first day and a total of $8.2 million in its opening weekend, topping the box office.[13][14]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 47% of 169 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.4/10. The website's consensus reads, "Magic Mike's Last Dance is loose and limber enough to entertain, although it's hard to escape the feeling that this franchise has lost a step or two along the way."[15] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 51 out of 100, based on 51 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[16]

Writing for CBC, Eli Glasner said "the love story is limp", but praised Tatum's performance: "If dry humping was an art, Channing Tatum would be Picasso".[17]
