Ravish Tiwari

Ravish Kumar Tiwari was born in Emilia village in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh on 2 September 1981. He received his primary education from Khalilabad in Basti district (now in Sant Kabir Nagar district). After the fifth class, he joined Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Basti (JNV, Basti) in 1991 where he completed his schooling till the twelfth class in 1998.[6]

After qualifying for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in 2000, Ravish joined IIT Bombay for a five-year dual degree course (B.Tech plus M.Tech) in Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science.[7] In 2005 he appeared for the Rhodes scholarship and was selected along with Atishi Singh[8] among six from India. Subsequently, he went to Oxford university to pursue a master's in Comparative Social Policy and wrote his thesis with the subject 'Social Justice in Secondary Education in India: State-wise Comparison'.

After his return from Oxford University, Ravish joined The Indian Express as the Principal Correspondent in 2006. He worked in the capacity of Principal Correspondent, Special Correspondent, Assistant Editor, and Senior Assistant Editor in The Indian Express till 2014. In 2014, he joined India Today as Associate Editor, and in 2015 joined The Economic Times as the Senior Assistant Editor. In June 2017, he returned to The Indian Express as the Chief of the National Bureau - the post which he held till the time of his demise.[7]

The Indian Express describes the role and contribution of Ravish as:

"Tiwari led a team of senior journalists at The Indian Express who covered the Union Government, including state and national elections, the Prime Minister’s Office, national security, strategic affairs, diplomacy, health, education, environment, and infrastructure. Leading from the front as a reporter and an editor, he had travelled and reported from extensively across the country on rural affairs, agriculture, [and] politics."[1]

Ravish died on 19 February 2022 after battling colon cancer for around two years.[9][1] Upon his death at the young age of 40, then the Indian President Mr. Ram Nath Kovind expressed his disappointment saying that his sudden and shocking demise silences a distinct voice in news media.[10][1][11][12] Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi gave his condolence saying that (with his demise) a bright career in the media world comes to an end.[10][1][11][12]
