Tim Thorpe

Tim Thorpe started playing the horn at an early age and, growing up in Hertfordshire, attended Watford Grammar School for Boys and The Purcell School for Young Musicians until 2002. He joined the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (2000–2002),[1] the European Union Youth Orchestra (2003)[2] and the international Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.[3] He attended Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he subsequently studied horn with Hugh Seenan. Thorpe became principal horn with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. In this position he was the soloist on numerous recordings and broadcasts, p.e. Mozart's horn concerto no. 4, performed at the Teatro Colón in Argentina.[4] Thorpe has been a guest performer London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.[5]

Thorpe has taught at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama,[6] at Wells Cathedral School[7] as well as giving masterclasses for "Bromley Youth Music Trust", "Music for Everyone"[8][9] and the “National Youth French Horn Ensemble of Great Britain“.[10]

In 2004 Thorpe was a winner of the annual competition of the Royal Over-Seas League. In the same year he also won the “Philip Jones Memorial Brass Awards” of the Royal Philharmonic Society.[15][16]
