Latar belakang

Lahir di New York City, Elsie Ferguson merupakan satu-satunya anak dari Hiram dan Amelia Ferguson. Ayahnya merupakan pengacara yang sukses.[1] Tumbuh dan terdidik di Manhattan, dia tertarik dalam bidang teater saat masih muda dan mengawali debutnya pada usia 17 tahun sebagai anggota tim paduan suara dalam komedi musikal. Dengan cepat dia dikenal sebagai perempuan tercantik yang pernah tampil di panggung teater Amerika Serikat. Selama hampir dua tahun dari 1903 sampai 1905 dia menjadi pemeran di The Girl from Kays dibintangi oleh Sam Bernard.[2][2][3][4]
