Martha Gellhorn

Martha Ellis Gellhorn[1] (8 November, 1908 – 15 Februari, 1998) adalah seorang novelis asal Amerika Serikat, penulis pariwisata, dan jurnalis yang dianggap sebagai salah satu koresponden perang terbesar di abad ke-20.[2][3] Dia melaporkan hampir setiap konflik besar yang terjadi di dunia selama 60 tahun kariernya. Gellhorn adalah istri ketiga novelis Amerika Ernest Hemingway, dari tahun 1940 hingga 1945. Dia meninggal bunuh diri pada tahun 1998 pada usia 89 tahun, setelah menderita sakit dan hampir sepenuhnya buta.[4] Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism diambil dari namanya.

Kematian dan warisan

Dalam tahun-tahun terakhirnya, kesehatan Gellhorn makin lemah, hampir buta dan menderita kanker ovarium yang telah menyebar ke hati nya. Pada 15 Februari 1998, dia bunuh diri di London dengan menelan kapsul sianida.[5]

Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism didirikan pada tahun 1999 untuk menghormatinya.[6]
