Kehidupan awal dan pendidikan
Chartoff lahir pada 26 Agustus 1933 di New York City, sebagai putra dari pasangan Bessie dan William Chartoff.[1] His family was Jewish.[2][3] Ia lulus pada Union College pada 1955, disusul oleh Columbia University Law School.
