Stadion ini dinamai Arthur Ashe, pemenang AS Terbuka perdana tahun 1968, yang pertama di mana para profesional dapat bertanding.[3] Desain asli stadion, selesai tahun 1997, belum termasuk atap.Setelah mengalami penundaan acara selama bertahun-tahun karena cuaca buruk, atap baru yang dapat dibuka kembali ringan diselesaikan pada tahun 2016.
