Which version? In should work to install Ubuntu Server (without extra server tools), boot into it and run `sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop` and reboot into Ubuntu Desktop. – sudodus Jun 06 '22 at 23:23
  • Does your box meet the minimum requires for Ubuntu Desktop. Many servers do **not** meet the video requirements (esp. dedicated RAM) and do better with *lighter* desktops rather than GNOME for your *unstated* release. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements FYI: Installing a server version is then adding desktop would normally be done to use a different installer; not get around *graphic* issues you appear to have.. unless it's a specific kernel stack you want (Ubuntu Desktop from 20.04 doesn't come with GA - server gives GA by default, but you weren't specific) – guiverc Jun 06 '22 at 23:27
