Ananta Malla was a Malla dynasty king of Nepal from around 1274 to 1308 C.E. He started his reign after deposing Jayasimha Malla of House of Tripura.[1]

Reign

Ananta Malla's reign started after deposing Jayasimha Malla with the help of House of Bhonta (Banepa). Ananta Malla reigned for 34 years and faced several invasions from his neighbouring kingdoms. From 1287 to 1290 Jitari Malla[lower-alpha 1] invaded three times burning down villages and forcing the residents to escape while also paying visits to religious temples. The Doya from Tirhut invaded in 1291 and in 1300 and inflicted fines on the House of Tripura (Bhadgaon). After their withdrawal, the internal political conflicts between the two contending Houses caused Ananta Malla to donate all his treasures to the Pashupatinath temple in 1307.[1][2]

It is believed that the House of Bhonta under the leadership of Jayadityadeva was actually the power behind the throne and Ananta Malla was a puppet ruler. After Ananta Malla, Jayadityadeva was made the heir-apparent but due to a conflict with his half-brother, Jayanandadeva instead succeeded Ananta Malla on the throne.[1][3]
