Andrew Sorrell

Justin Andrew Sorrell (born November 15, 1985) is an American politician who is the incumbent State Auditor of Alabama, serving since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served in the Alabama House of Representatives, representing the 3rd district from 2018 to 2022.[1][2][3][4]

Alabama House of Representatives

Sorrell won the 3rd District of the Alabama House in the 2018 election. The incumbent of 28 years, Marcel Black, decided to retire. Sorrell was the first Republican to hold the office in 45 years. During his tenure, he served on the following committees: Ethics and Campaign Finance, Technology and Research, and Financial Services.

2018 election

Sorrell defeated Humphrey Lee in the 2018 Republican primary. Lee was the former president of Northwest Shoals Community College. Sorrell won with 76.5% of the vote.[5] In the general election, Sorrell defeated Chad Young, the Democratic nominee for the seat. Sorrell ended up winning with 52.5% of the vote.[6]

State Auditor of Alabama

Sorrell was the first person to declare candidacy in the 2022 election for State Auditor of Alabama, seeking the Republican nomination. His campaign was announced in June 2021, with Sorrell stating "I want to make sure that every penny of property belonging to the citizens of Alabama is properly accounted for." The incumbent, Jim Zeigler, was term-limited.[3] In the May 24 primary, Sorrell finished with 39.5% of the vote, ahead of the two other candidates, but not enough to avoid a runoff. Sorrell faced professional counselor Stan Cooke in the June 21 runoff,[7] which Sorrell won. He faced Libertarian nominee Leigh Lachine in the general election; no Democratic candidate qualified in the auditor race.[4] Sorrell won the general election with 85% of the vote and was inaugurated as State Auditor in January 2023.[8]
