Pravi represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "Voilà", securing 2nd place, the best result for France since 1991.[2] Her debut album, On n'enferme pas les oiseaux was released on 27 August 2021.

Early life

Barbara Piévic (Serbian Cyrillic: Пјевић, romanized: Pjević) was born in Paris on 10 April 1993.[3] Her family consists primarily of artists and musicians, being surrounded by paintings and music since childhood. Pravi's father is of Serbian and Algerian Jewish descent, while her mother is of Polish Jewish and Iranian origin.[4] Pravi's maternal grandfather is the Iranian painter Hossein Zenderoudi.[3][2]

Career

2014–2018: Early career

Pravi began her music career in 2014, after meeting French musician Jules Jaconelli. With Jaconelli, she began composing songs. The following year, she released an original song titled "Amour Impoli",[5] which led to her signing a contract with Capitol Music France. She adopted the stage name Barbara Pravi from the Serbian word pravi (Serbian Cyrillic: прави, lit.'real', 'authentic', in the masculine), as a homage to her Serbian grandfather.[6] Upon beginning her professional recording career, Pravi performed on the soundtrack of the French version of the Swiss film Heidi with the song "On m'appelle Heidi" and afterwards was cast as Solange Duhamel in the musical show Un été 44 in November 2016, performing songs written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, Charles Aznavour and Maxime Le Forestier.[7][8]

In 2017, Pravi released her first official single "Pas grandir".[9] The single was later included on her self-titled debut extended play, which was released the following year. Also in 2017, Pravi starred in the television film La Sainte famille, as the role of Marion,[10] was later broadcast on France 2 in December 2019.[11] From 2017 until 2018, Pravi performed on the 55 Tour, supporting French singer Florent Pagny.[12] At the end of 2018, Pravi decided to alter her musical style by adopting a more traditional French chanson style, rather than the pop music that had dominated her early releases.[13]

Along with writing and composing her own songs, Pravi has written for several other artists including Yannick Noah,[14] Julie Zenatti,[15] Chimène Badi,[16] Jaden Smith,[11] Louane and Florent Pagny.[17]

Eurovision Song Contest/ Junior Eurovision Song Contest

  • In the year 2019 she wrote the song "Bim bam toi" with Igit, with which the performer Carla Lazzari represented France at the Junior ESC 2019 in Gliwice and finally took 5th place. After the contest, this song went viral and received the TikTok-disk for the first time with a song from France.
  • In the year 2020 she wrote the song "J'Imagine" with Igit, with which the performer Valentina Tronel represented France at the Junior ESC 2020 in Warsaw and finally won, the 1st place. This entry gave France the first JESC victory in history.
  • On January 30, 2021, she won Eurovision France, c'est vous qui décidez, the French preliminary round, for the ESC 2021.

In the year 2021 she wrote the lyric with Igit and Lili Poe and composed the music with Igit for the song "Voilà", with which herself represented France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam and finally took 2nd place. (Måneskin have the ESC 2021 won.) This year's entry achieved the best placement since 1977 (2nd place) and the highest number of points (499 points) since 1956 (since France joined the ESC/ the ESC was founded). Pravi was often asked to represent France at ESC, but she turned it down because she "didn't feel ready" - until 2021…

  • In the year 2022 she wrote the song "Oh Maman!"  with Frédéric Château, with which the performer Lissandro Formica represented France at the Junior ESC 2022 in Yerewan and finally won, the 1st place. This entry gave France the second JESC victory.

2021–present: Post-Eurovision ventures

In July 2021, Pravi announced her first international tour for her debut studio album, On n'enferme pas les oiseaux (English: We don't lock up the birds), which came out on 27 August 2021.[18][19]

Pravi performed "Voilà" as an interval act at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021, which took place on 19 December in Paris.[20] Pravi also performed the song "L'homme et l'oiseau" (English: The man and the bird) at the 37th edition of the Victoires de la Musique, where she went on to win the Female Revelation of the Year award.[21][22]

On International Women's Day, 8 March 2022, Pravi released "Priére pour soi" (English: Prayer for yourself).[23]

On 13 July 2022, Pravi released "365", which is dedicated to all the fans who have supported her in the past year.[24]

Pravi co-wrote Lissandro's song "Oh maman!", which went on to win the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 for France.[25][26]

On 21 December, Pravi was announced as Florence in the TV movie "Adieu Vinyle" to be premiered on France 2, it is supposed to be premiered in mid 2023.[27] This is Pravi's 3rd acting role after Un été 44 (2016) [28] and La sainte famille (2017, but premiered in 2019).[29] It is also credited on her portfolio that she starred in Barbara Pravi (voilà qui je suis) in 2021 but this was a documentary which she was the person they were filming about.

In late 2022 and early 2023, Pravi was rumoured to represent France in Eurovision Song Contest 2023.[30] It has been confirmed to be false as Alexandra Redde Amiel, the French head of delegation for Eurovision, confirmed that La Zarra will represent them in Liverpool. However, Pravi is still accredited for Eurovision Song Contest 2023 on IMDb alongside Megan Chung so it's been unannounced whether she is still currently active in the cast for the show, as herself, as a composer, as something completely different or inactive in the show's broadcast in Early to mid May 2023.[31]

On January 6, 2023, she announced she was officially signed to Virgin Records France after 8 years at Capitol Music France. It is currently unknown if she is still signed to Universal Music France, Intagio Records and Megan Entertainment Group but looking at the announcement post, it looks like she is still singed to them, as they wasn't mentioned.[32]

On January 8, 2023, she announced she was officially preparing her second full-length album after On n'enferme pas les oiseaux which was released in August 2021. She is working on this alongside her television movie debut in Adieu Vinyle, a TV movie which is set to premiere on France 3 in mid 2023.

[33]

On January 13, 2023, she was announced as a temporary host on the BBC podcast show "Music Life". The first episode included November Ultra, Pi Ja Ma, Yaël Naïm and Melissa Lauveux and the second episode explains Pravi's playlist "Sur la route" (on the road) which is a playlist she plays on tour. Also on this show, Pravi confirmed that she has a new project (assumption that it's a single) coming out March 8, 2023, with lots of drawings and poems attached with the project. This also follows on from her French radio debut on RTL2's Foudre with Waxx, which she co-hosted an episode with Waxx.

    66. "Barbara Pravi on Instagram: "95 years ago in 1927, in days perhaps similar to our days , a ballad was written called Daughters of Cyrus. The author and composer of this ballad, "Mohammad Ali Amir Jahid "and "Morteza Ni Dawood" , have preferred that their names as the creators of this song remain hidden due to the fear of the possible reactions of religious fanatics to this song. A song with a theme in opposition to the compulsory hijab of women. Today's women's liberation movement is a newly blooming flower bud which seeds were planted by very brave and free sprite women. 170 years ago, Qurrat al-Ain was burned for took off her hijab to stand up against oppression, and no voice was raised from a man. 44 years ago, after the Islamic revolution in Iran, women were forced to wear hijab, but our fathers did not make a sound against it. Today, men in Iran risk their lives and die for freedom of women. And this is the victory itself. Viva: Woman, life, freedom Merci mes amies, mes sœurs, @aidanosrat et @golfarahani. Instagram.
