Looping State of Mind

Looping State of Mind is the third studio album by Swedish electronic music producer Axel Willner under his alias The Field. It was released by Kompakt on 10 October 2011.

Release

Axel Willner announced the release of a new album called Looping State of Mind under his alias The Field on August 2011.[2][3] Willner said that the title "comes from the feeling of having looping thoughts—both good and bad—in your head, and being unable to get them out. But then, of course, my music is based around loops and repetition too."[4] The album's release date was planned to be 25 October 2011. On September 2011, the planned release date was changed to 10 October.[5] Willner toured throughout North America and Europe from October–December 2011 to promote the album.[6]

Looping State of Mind was released for digital download on 5 September 2011.[7] Josh Hall of Line of Best Fit believed the early release was because "some little shit decided to leak it."[8] The track "Then It's White" was released the same day on Kompakt's SoundCloud account,[9][10] leading to Willner to enter Hype Machine's most blogged artists chart that week.[11] Kompakt released Looping State of Mind physically on 10 October 2011.[12][13] A remix EP version was released by Kompakt on 30 July 2012.[14] The EP consists of three songs: a Junior Boys remix of "Looping State of Mind", a Blondes remix of "It's Up There", and a Mohn remix of "Then It's White".[15]

According to the review aggregator website Metacritic, Looping State of Mind has received "universal acclaim",[17] and was listed as the 17th best-reviewed album of 2011 with over fifteen reviews. Of the album's reception, Metacritic stated, "Swedish minimal techno artist Axel Willner, who records as The Field, hasn't shown any progression in album cover design since 2007's From Here We Go Sublime. Fortunately, his quality level has remained almost as consistent, with critics admiring his considerable composition skills on this third album (which should re-convert any fans who were disappointed in Willner's second LP)."[27]

Pitchfork placed the album at number 26 on its list of the top 50 albums of 2011.[28]
