History

According to Sony's senior vice president of platform experience Hideaki Nishino, development took about six years, and was developed simultaneously alongside the PlayStation 5, with the goal to craft the perfect match of console and virtual reality device.[5]

Leading up to the PS VR2 release, display analyst Ross Young said that he expect the PS VR2's display to have the highest pixel density on a commercial OLED panel, with pixel density "well above 800 PPI".[6]

At the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony announced the PlayStation VR2 for the PlayStation 5.[7][8]

A release date of February 22, 2023, and a retail price of $549.99 was announced on November 2, 2022 at the official PlayStation Blog.[9]

Hardware

The headset will connect to the PlayStation 5 console with a single USB-C cable, that is approximately 4.5m (14.7 ft) long, which will enable a simple plug and play design.[10][11]

The PlayStation VR2 will have dual OLED panel with a 4K display resolution with 90Hz/120Hz frame rate.[10][12] Each display will have a resolution of 2,000 x 2,040 pixels.[4] HDR will also be supported.[10] The headsets will also use frensel lenses.[12][13]

Unlike the first generation PlayStation VR, which tracked player movements through an external PlayStation Camera, the PS VR2 will track movements by four cameras mounted on the headset.[3][4] The headset tracking cameras will also be used to track the controllers,[14] and to give feed for the "see-through view" feature, which will allow the user to view their surroundings without needing to take off the headset.[10]

The headset also has two inward-facing IR cameras.[15] It will be used for eye-tracking to enable games to utilize foveated rendering, a performance optimization technique where the render resolution of the game is reduced in areas where the player is not looking.[4] There is also other uses for eye-tracking, like providing an additional input method for the game with a simple look in a specific direction.[16][17][18]

PS VR2 has a new lens adjustment dial, which will allow the headset to accommodate different IPD (inter papillary distance) measurements.[10][19]

PS VR2 also features headset feedback with subtle haptic effects, like the rush of objects passing close to the head.[10][20]

Additionally, PS VR2 will integrate a new vents in its design that will allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while the player is wearing the headset.[21]

The headset has built-in microphone and stereo headphone jack.[10] Using the PS5 "Tempest 3D AudioTech", the headset will support 3D audio through headphones, while also allowing the in-game audio to dynamically adapts to the user position and head movements.[22]

The PS VR2 will feature a new Sense controllers.[3] The controller is shaped like an "orb or hollowed-out sphere" to ideally position a ring of 14 IR LEDs that is used for tracking its position and orientation.[14] The features of these controllers include the same haptic feedback and adaptive triggers technology of the DualSense controller.[3][23] Another feature is the finger touch detection, which will allow the user to make a more natural gestures during gameplay.[24] This will be achieved by using five capacitive finger touch sensors on each controller (four sensors for each button and one sensor for the analog stick) to detect the placements of the thumb, index, or the middle finger.[14][24][25]

PS VR2 will also support Cinematic Mode, which is used to view all non-VR game and media contents on a virtual cinema screen, the contents will be displayed in 1920×1080 HDR video format with 24/60Hz and also 120Hz frame rate.[10]

Games and content

More than 100 games are in development for PS VR2 according to Sony,[10] including Resident Evil Village, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, No Man's Sky, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, Demeo and PS VR2 exclusives Horizon Call of the Mountain, crossfire sierra squad, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR and Firewall Ultra.[26] Gran Turismo 7 and Beat Saber were also confirmed in January.[27][28]

PS VR2 isn't compatible with the previous generation PS VR games because, according to Sony, the headset was designed to deliver "a truly next-generation VR experience".[29][30] Sony further explained that due to differences in both the controller tracking hardware and the image rendering principle, porting games from the previous hardware will be difficult.[31] It was later reported that many developers are working to upgrade their PS VR games for the PS VR2 system, while also taking advantage of the new hardware features.[32]

Reception

Early previews have been positive.[3] The new Sense controllers received acclaim from CNET.[4] The lack of backward compatibility, and the price of the headset received mixed reaction.[33][34][35][36] Various developers praised the capabilities of the headset, particularly in combination with the PS5 console.[37][38] In regards to the games, previews of the launch title Gran Turismo 7 was overwhelmingly positive, with some describing it as "the best console virtual reality experience to date".[39][40][41]
