Speed limits in Guernsey

Speed limits in Guernsey differ from those in neighbouring Jersey, the UK or France. All speed limits are in miles per hour.

Guernsey has an island-wide maximum speed limit of 35 miles per hour (56 km/h). Most roads on the Island are narrow and not designed for fast traffic.

On the approaches to St Peter Port, near schools and in some other areas a 25 mph (40 km/h) limit applies.

There are some exceptions, such as around St Sampson's High School and along The Quay where the limit is 20 mph (32 km/h). Seasonal reduced limits apply some roads. Limits of 12 mph (19 km/h) and 15 mph (24 km/h) apply on some town roads, primarily "Prohibited Streets" where access is only allowed by permit holders.

Reduced speed limits also apply to several categories of vehicle:

  • 8 mph (13 km/h) for steam boilers, tar boilers, concrete mixers, material spreaders and other trailers of any kind whatsoever with metal wheels.
  • 12 mph (19 km/h) for four-wheeled heavy trailers of the low loader type.
  • 20 mph (32 km/h) for caravan homes, horse and cattle boxes and two-wheeled trailers.
  • 25 mph (40 km/h) for buses, any motor vehicle exceeding two tons unladen weight and articulated vehicles.
