Yakob Sayuri

Yakob Sayuri (born 22 September 1997) is an Indonesian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Liga 1 club PSM Makassar and the Indonesia national team.[2] He is the twin brother of Yance Sayuri, who is also a footballer.[3]

Club career

Early career

Coming from the remote island chain of Yapen in Papua province, Yakob has no experience training in any soccer school or organized youth team. He started his professional career in 2017 in the third-tier of Indonesian football with Persewar Waropen after coach Eduard Ivakdalam, a former national team player, found Yakob casually playing in his hometown of Serui. Yakob followed Ivakdalam when the coach in 2018 moved to train Persemi Mimika, another Liga 3 team from Papua. Coaches with interests in raw Papuan talents started to observe Yakob.

Barito Putera

Brazilian coach Jacksen F. Tiago, who played and coached for the leading club in Papua, Persipura Jayapura, was one of the coaches with an eye on Papuan talent. Tiago in 2019 recruited Yakob to play for Liga 1 club Barito Putera, which is based in the South Kalimantan provincial capital of Banjarmasin on Borneo island. In his breakout season, Yakob played 25 matches and scored twice for his first top-flight team. His meteoric rise from no previous club to becoming a starter of a Liga 1 team within two years earned him a call to join the Indonesia U-23 team in mid-2019.

PSM Makassar

Yakob's 2019 performance led the oldest team in Liga 1, PSM Makassar, to hire him in 2020.[4] Yakob made his first Liga 1 appearance on 1 February 2020 for the team, coming on as a substitute for Ezra Walian in the 81st minute in a 2–1 win over PSS Sleman.[5]

On 26 February 2020, Yakob scored his first AFC Cup goal for PSM Makassar in the 53rd minute of a 3–1 win against Myanmar National League club Shan United, especially for the second goal that was scored by Yakob, this goal was not only successful in helping PSM win. However, it also made it into the AFC Goal of The Week nomination.[6] Yakob only made 2 appearances in the Liga 1 and 3 appearances in the 2020 AFC Cup with PSM in the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even so, Yakob impressed in PSM's international matches in the 2020 AFC Cup. This led to invitations to train for the Indonesia senior team under coach Shin Tae-yong.

On 18 September 2021, Yakob made his first league goal for the club in Liga 1, earning them a 3–1 win over Persebaya Surabaya.[7] Five days later. Yakob made 1 assists at 2–3 won against Persik Kediri.[8] He scored his league goal for the club, opening the scoring in a 2–1 loss against Borneo Samarinda on 22 October and opening the scoring in a 1–2 won against PS Barito Putera on 28 January 2022.[9][10]

On 7 February 2022, Yakob scored in injury time of second half and saved PSM Makassar from losing to Bali United, score draw 2–2.[11] On 29 August 2022, he scored a brace and give assists a goal by Ramadhan Sananta in PSM Makassar's 5–1 win over Persib Bandung.[12] Yakob scored in 45th minutes and give another assists a opening goal by Ramadhan Sananta in PSM Makassar's 3–0 win over Persebaya on 10 September 2022.[13]

On 30 January 2023, Yakob scored another brace in a 3–1 win against RANS Nusantara, the latter result saw PSM Makassar move to 2nd position in the league table.[14]

International career

Yakob made his international debut for Indonesia U-23 on 7 June 2019 against Thailand U-23 and Philippines U-23 on 9 June 2019 at the 2019 Merlion Cup.[15] He received a call to join the senior Indonesian national football team in May 2021. He earned his first senior cap in a 25 May 2021 friendly match in Dubai against Afghanistan.[16][17]

Yakob gave two assists to goal by Ramadhan Sananta (68th minute), Marc Klok (86th minute) and scored his first international goal in injury time for national team in Indonesia's 7–0 win over Brunei on 26 December 2022.[18] Playing 27 minutes by providing 2 assists and 1 goal, Yakob was chosen as man of the match in the follow-up match against Brunei by Mitsubishi Electric as the main sponsor of the 2022 AFF Championship.[19]

Yakob Sayuri's twin brother Yance Sayuri[21] played his first match for PSM Makassar on 26 October 2021.[22]
