Tema

Menurut beberapa kritikus film, The Devil in a Convent memplesetkan kehidupan biara, menyiratkan pandangan satir terhadap Gereja Katolik. Méliès nyaris sepakat dengan perasaan anti-gerejawi yang timbul saat perkara Dreyfus pada 1898 dan 1899; Méliès mendukung pihak Alfred Dreyfus dan Gereja menentangnya.[2] Méliès membuat satir agama lain, The Temptation of Saint Anthony, pada tahun yang sama,[2] serta seri film buatannya yang sangat pro-Dreyfus The Dreyfus Affair.[3]
